Today's headlines

1 · GEOPOLITICS
Washington raised the pressure on Iran again, with the Treasury vowing unprecedented sanctions and the Navy tightening its blockade of Iranian shipping.
Treasury doubles down
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington would impose the toughest sanctions in its history to collapse the Iranian government, urging other nations including China to join the effort. China dismissed the push as economic warfare that will not resolve the underlying disputes.
Blockade tightens
US Central Command said it has redirected 67 merchant vessels, disabled three and boarded two more while enforcing the naval blockade of Iranian ports. Vice President JD Vance called it a new phase of economic pressure that Washington intends to keep building.
Iran pushes back
Iran's foreign ministry called the proposed measures illegal and inhumane, while Tehran's foreign minister dismissed the sanctions threat as a distraction from mounting US debt. Neither side has signalled any move back toward talks.
2 · OIL & SUPPLY
Hormuz crossings roughly halved in a day, keeping Brent elevated even as prices eased back slightly.
Hormuz traffic thins
Crossings through the Strait of Hormuz fell to around seven vessels on Thursday, roughly half the previous day's total, with tracking data showing the waterway still nowhere near its pre-war traffic of over a hundred ships a day.
Brent eases from highs
Brent crude traded around $93.24 a barrel, down 0.58% on the day but still close to its recent peak after a strong run higher this week on the tightening Hormuz standoff.
Curve stays firm
The forward curve remains elevated out to the end of the decade, with front seasons carrying the bulk of the risk premium for as long as the strait stays effectively closed to commercial shipping.
3 · SUPPLY SECURITY
Russia is widening its campaign against Ukraine's energy system, targeting heat and water supplies ahead of the coming winter.
Tactics shift for winter
Ukrainian officials say Russian strikes are increasingly aimed at heating and water infrastructure rather than power generation alone, a shift seen as an attempt to complicate preparations for the 2026-27 heating season.
Naftogaz under pressure
State gas producer Naftogaz has been hit roughly 300 times since the start of the year, with recent waves of strikes forcing some wells offline and damaging production and drilling sites.
Independence day risk
Ukrainian intelligence has warned of a larger strike campaign timed around independence day on 24 August, adding a near-term risk premium to the supply security picture.
