Shipping attacks continue
A container ship and a dry bulk carrier both sank near the Strait of Hormuz in the 24 hours to Wednesday after being hit by projectiles, and attacks around the waterway have surged over the past 10 days as Iran steps up strikes in response to the US blockade of its ports (Reuters via The Irish Times, 15 October).
Sanctions easing under review
A US official said the administration is considering allowing oil to flow on previously sanctioned shadow-fleet vessels to cut record freight costs, which is the main new development on the price side (same report).
Saudi Arabia targeted
Houthi forces attacked an administrative building belonging to Saudi Aramco in Dhahran, causing a limited fire, and have fired ballistic missiles and drones at Saudi Arabia over the past week (Reuters via RTE, 14 October).
Supply is rerouting, not recovering
The IEA said Middle East Gulf crude exports rose 4.4 million bpd in September to about 75% of prewar levels. President Trump said the Iran war will end very soon, while Iran says talks need approval from its top security body (market news email, 15 October).
Oil levels
Brent closed at 105.92 $/bbl on 15 October, down 0.1% on the day, and WTI at 97.97 $/bbl, up 3.1% (Market Data). UK gas and power are priced separately, but an oil and shipping risk premium tends to spill over.
